December 2009

Dear Friends of Kai Restaurant:
I am forever grateful for all the customers- old and new, who are visiting us at KAI for lunch or dinner. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than to see everyone happy with our menu. As the year winds down, I can honestly say that I am a bit exhausted. A happy exhaustion from our busy year!
With 2010 around the corner, I am already preparing for “Osechi”, the traditional Japanese New Year meal. The New Year holiday is one of the most important celebrations in the Japanese culture. It is believed that the Deities, in which there are more than 800 in Japan, will be welcomed by every family during the New Year holidays. In order to welcome and entertain them with comfort and grace, the Osechi meal is prepared ahead of time so there is no raucous in the kitchen and women can take a break from their daily cooking(although not always the case today) during the New Year holidays.
From this tradition, the Osechi dishes are prepared to last for several days and beautifully arranged in “Jubako”, meaning “Stacked Box”. Each item has a symbolic meaning to celebrate the coming year.
This year at KAI, we will be preparing up to 20 Osechi Boxes which will be reservation only, first- come first serve basis. The Osechi will be ready for pick up on December 31st. >Click to view this year's Osechi Menu
After that I will take a New Year break for myself! Have a happy holiday!
Come join us at Kai and enjoy the Winter flavors!
