Margaret's Hope Estate
3 oz loose leaf tea in our exclusive canister
In the 1870's Mr. Cruikshank, the founder of Margaret's Hope Estate, became the first to plant tea on the south west ridge on the Balsun River. Without modern machinery this was a monumental task, but breathtaking views of a horizon where the Himalayas rise for miles out of the Kurseong Valley redoubled their efforts.
The dramatic landscape surrounding this estate was not lost on Mr. Cruikshank's young daughter Margaret. She fell in love with the gardens, and was saddened when she and her mother had to return to England. The family decided she would return as soon as possible, but on the four month long journey at sea tragedy struck. Margaret became ill and died on the voyage. Mr. Cruikshank, who would not be separated from his estate for this trip, was overcome with grief.
Nothing seemed to raise his spirits until one day a vision of Margaret came to him as he was walking through the gardens. The estate, previously named Chota Ringtong, would be renamed in memory of her. Mr. Cruikshank, now the proud owner of Margaret's Hope Estate, found solace in knowing that as long as the estate carried her name his memory of her would never leave him.Now a century later Margaret’s Hope Estate is one of the most renown estates in the Darjeeling region, and continues to produce exceptional teas that are as enduring as the memory of its namesake. This particular first flush Darjeeling is especially delicate with a flowery aroma and a fresh clean taste of young muscatel.
